Taiwan Ministry of Education Commends SGI-Taiwan for Sixth Time

The Taiwan Ministry of Education selected SGI-Taiwan as one of 32 organizations and individuals to receive its Excellent Community and Education Organization Awards. This prestigious honor is given annually to selected social, educational, cultural and religious organizations in Taiwan for outstanding contributions to advancing social education. This was SGI-Taiwan's sixth time to be honored with the award. Vice Education Minister Dr. Lu Mu-lin presented the certificate to SGI-Taiwan Vice General Director Huang Chen Chia on November 11 at a conferral at the National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. Dr. Lu praised all the recipients for their contributions to lifetime education in Taiwan. SGI-Taiwan was specifically recognized for contributing to social beneficence through its religious, cultural and educational activities that promote the public good. The Taiwan organization was also praised for its publication of books on Buddhism and education, as well as for advancing education of youth and women, which contribute to a spiritual renaissance and the building of a peaceful society.
SGI Children's Picture Book Exhibition Opens in Edmonton, Canada

On October 31-November 5, "Read Me a Story!," an exhibit showcasing children's storybooks and folk tales from around the world showed at the City Hall in Edmonton, Canada. The event was cosponsored by the United Nations Association in Canada-Edmonton Branch, Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace and SGI-Canada's Edmonton Region.

More than 1,200 books from 120 countries and regions, selected from over 10,000 gathered, were displayed. Among the highlights were 21 colossal panoramic picture book panels--2 meters by 3 meters--depicting representative stories through larger-than-life drawings and paintings. Mr. Ikeda's children's storybooks, such as The Snow Country Prince, about a young boy and girl in a fishing village in the snow country, who care for an injured swan through the harsh winter, was introduced. Some 600 attended the opening, including Alberta Minister of Community Development Gary G. Mar and many children, parents and schoolteachers. Over 3,000 visited the six-day show.
