Brazil's Minister of Tourism Marta Suplicy
On February 21, 2008, some 1,000 BSGI members and their friends attended a lecture by Brazil's Minister of Tourism Marta Suplicy at the SGI-Brazil (BSGI) Culture Center in São Paulo. To commemorate the Japan-Brazil Exchange Year (2008) and the centennial of Japanese immigration to Brazil, Ms. Suplicy spoke on Japanese immigrants' contributions to Brazil during the past 100 years, emphasizing in particular the influence of Japanese culture on Brazilian society. Ms. Suplicy expressed her hopes that the Ministry of the Tourism would further promote exchanges between the two countries. Concurring with the SGI's philosophy of humanism, she expressed her appreciation for the local SGI members' continuous efforts to develop peace, education and culture in Brazilian society.

To commemorate the centennial year of Japanese immigration to Brazil, BSGI plans to sponsor the "Treasures of Japanese Art Exhibition," which will be loaned from the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum's private collection. The exhibit is scheduled for June in Brasilia, the country's capital.

Following the lecture, BSGI youth performed music and dances.
